Why is marriage called "wedlock"?

Wedd is. an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "to gamble," and for them, marriage is a great gamble. In the old days, brides were bartered by thier fathers. They can be exchange for either property or cash.  A young woman would have been bought and sold for breeding purposes. The final deal is done thru a wedlock ritual called a wedding.
means "the state of motherhood."
